“The Pool knows when you’re ready.”
Jonathan sat back in his chair. The woman and the little girl looked bloated and blue. The look of bodies after they are pulled out of water. The woman’s clouded eyes looked stunned as Jonathan explained the Pool rules to her. It always amazed him that most souls had no idea of their predicament. The little ones always seemed to have an inclination though. Jonathan smiled at the little girl, and she smiled a drooped smile back. The lady’s eyes regained some form of light, at least as much as they could regain. She looked to be coming out of the trance that Jonathan had put her in.
“Anyway. Here’s your room key. It’s room number one, the first door on the left. Hope you enjoy your stay at the motel.” Jonathan gave the woman a big smile. It was always room number one. It was the room closest to the Pool gate.
“Thank you, sir, it has been a long drive from Texas. Me and Emma are dead on our feet.” The dead woman said. Her voice reminded Jonathan of an old movie he’d seen once with a creature who had come out of the water. Brown Sludge dripped from her blue lipped mouth as she looked down at the little girl and tried to smile.
Jonathan’s smile got bigger. “Oh, I’m sure you are. The road will do that to you. You guys go get some rest now. It was good meeting the both of you.” He went along with the woman’s story she was telling herself, as he did with everyone who came through the motel door. It was important that they found their own way.
The bloated lady grabbed the little girls hand and shuffled out of the door with wet squishy steps

This is a short story compilation from one of the best. Ted Chiang know how to set a mood. Story of your Life was the story that the movie Arrival was based on.

The Quantum Ghost, by Jonathan Ballagh

A fun read that will make you think about reality in a different way. Mr. Ballagh is a very talented writer.

Tales from the Canyons of the Damned  Omnibus #1, by Daniel Arthur Smith, and various authors.

I am not just choosing this one because my story Float is in it. This first Canyons Omnibus is chock full of entertaining stories that seemed to have been made for lounging by the pool. Pool? Did somebody say Pool?

Mr. Bolz main character will hook you into her plight. Make sure you wear lots of sunscreen, because you will lose track of time and get one heck of a sunburn when you read this.

When Hank isn’t doing his successful podcast, he is writing about a guy and his magical typewriter. I recommend this one for a nice evening on the lake.

The Life of Ants

So this is what I am going to do. My story, The Life of Ants that is coming out May 19th, will be followed by “The Life of Ants, The Hybrid.” I will be releasing this series as episodes every couple of months or so. The story follows Gram, and Robin. Two people who have seen a mysterious orb their whole lives. They finally decide to follow the weird circle and end up changing human history, and evolution. Is it for the better? Well that is for you, The Reader, to figure out.

Here is a sample paragraph of The Life of Ants episode 1

“The hum started under his feet. Subtle at first, a tickle between the toes but quickly it built to a controlled vibration. The rusty walls shimmered with each shake. Gram rubbed his eyes, not sure if he was hallucinating again. The vibration intensified, making Gram’s head shake. His eyes bounced in their sockets and everything appeared fuzzy with rounded corners.

A light shined through the holes on the floor of the box car, making it a solid white color. The whiteness climbed up the walls like milk that had been recently spilled. The white light lit up the car. Gram squinted his eyes against the brilliance of the Train cars walls.

The sudden urge to bolt for the door welled up inside of him but when he looked to his right, the rusty door was no longer there. It was replaced with just more white light. Where there had once been an old latch door handle was now a smooth white surface that seemed to flow, and breath, as if the walls were alive. The size of the box cars interiors shifted from a confined space to a vast hall, and back again. The train cars walls rolled in and out like waves of the ocean, making Gram dizzy. Gram pushed the panic that was trying to force its way into his head out. He needed to be calm. After everything that had happened what did he expect by following a circle of light into the desert. He thought. There was no point in panicking, Gram figured he was here for the duration of whatever this display was. He was supposed to be here. He was supposed to see. He was chosen.”
